We’ve had plenty of conversations with homeowners who got a quote from another company, felt good about the number, and then were surprised by a much higher final bill once the project wrapped up. This isn’t always dishonesty, sometimes it’s just an incomplete quote that left out details that matter. As one of the granite companies in Crossville, TN relies on for installations, we’d rather walk through these costs upfront than let them show up as a surprise later.

Why Does the Slab Price Rarely Match the Final Bill?

The slab price rarely matches the final bill because it typically only covers material, not fabrication, installation, or any add-ons like cutouts and edge work. A quote that only lists a per-square-foot slab price is incomplete by design.

Granite generally runs $50-$90 per sq ft slab, but installation fees from $35 per sq ft get added separately, along with charges for sink cutouts, seams, and edge detailing. Some granite companies in Crossville, TN homeowners have worked with in the past presented only the slab number, which made a modest kitchen project look far cheaper than it actually was.

What Costs Get Left Out of Basic Quotes Most Often?

The costs left out most often are removal of the old countertop, plumbing disconnection and reconnection, and disposal fees for the old material. These aren’t optional steps, they’re just sometimes priced as add-ons rather than included upfront.

We’ve seen quotes that looked competitive until a homeowner realized tear-out and haul-away weren’t included, adding several hundred dollars after the fact. This is one of the most common complaints we hear about granite companies in Crossville, TN homeowners have used before switching to us.

Do Edge Profiles Really Add That Much to the Price?

Yes, edge profiles can add a meaningful amount, especially detailed options like ogee, bullnose, or waterfall edges that require extra fabrication time. A basic eased edge is usually included in a standard quote, but upgraded profiles rarely are.

Waterfall edges in particular require an additional finished side cut from the same slab, which uses more material and labor than a standard edge. Homeowners comparing granite companies in Crossville, TN should always ask whether the quoted edge style matches what they actually want, not just the cheapest option listed.

Are Sink and Cooktop Cutouts Included in a Standard Quote?

Sink and cooktop cutouts are sometimes included in a base quote, but not always, and the type of cutout affects the price significantly. An undermount sink cutout typically costs more than a standard drop-in because of the additional polishing required on the exposed edge.

We’ve had clients assume their cutout was included based on a verbal estimate, only to find an added line item once the invoice came through. This is why we itemize cutouts clearly for every project, regardless of how other granite companies in Crossville, TN homeowners may have dealt with in the past structure their pricing.

What About Seams, Do They Cost Extra?

Seams themselves aren’t usually billed separately, but the number and placement of seams can affect overall labor cost, especially on large islands or L-shaped counters. More complex layouts requiring multiple seams take longer to fabricate and install.

Some companies quote a flat rate without accounting for a layout that will require two or three seams instead of one, which affects both labor time and slab usage. We walk through seam placement during the design phase so there are no surprises once fabrication starts.

Granite vs. Quartz vs. Marble: How Do Hidden Costs Compare?

Granite tends to have more predictable hidden costs than marble, while quartz often carries a higher base price but fewer surprise add-ons since it doesn’t require sealing. Here’s how the three compare when it comes to costs beyond the sticker price.

Marble tends to carry more long-term hidden costs due to sealing frequency and higher repair risk, while granite strikes a more predictable balance for most kitchen budgets.

Does Removing the Old Countertop Cost Extra?

Yes, removing the old countertop is usually a separate line item unless specifically bundled into the quote. This includes disconnecting plumbing, detaching the old slab or laminate, and hauling it away.

We include this as a clearly stated cost upfront rather than folding it into a vague installation number that doesn’t specify what’s covered. Homeowners working with granite companies in Crossville, TN should always ask directly whether tear-out and disposal are included before signing anything.

Why Do Some Timelines Change Mid-Project, Adding Cost?

Timelines change mid-project most often due to slab availability, cabinet readiness, or last-minute design changes, and delays can sometimes carry added costs if rescheduling or storage is involved. A standard project runs 10-14 business days from template to install, assuming the chosen slab is in stock.

If a homeowner changes their sink style or edge profile after templating, that can require a new cutout or even a new slab, adding both time and cost. We flag these risks clearly during the consultation so there’s no confusion about what triggers a schedule or price change.

How Can Homeowners Avoid These Hidden Costs?

Homeowners can avoid hidden costs by requesting a fully itemized quote that separates slab price, installation, cutouts, edge profile, tear-out, and disposal before signing anything. A vague one-line total is a red flag worth asking about.

We provide detailed written quotes for every project so clients know exactly what’s included before we start. Comparing granite companies in Crossville, TN homeowners are considering should always include asking each one for the same level of detail, not just a bottom-line number.

Do We Have a Location in Crossville, TN?

No, we do not have an office or showroom in Crossville, TN. Stone Depot of Knoxville operates a single showroom in Knoxville, and we travel out for templating, fabrication coordination, and installation.

Clients from Crossville typically visit our Knoxville showroom to select slabs in person, since seeing the actual stone matters more than working from a photo or sample chip. Stone Depot of Knoxville handles everything from that point forward, including templating and final installation at the project site.

Which Stones Tend to Have the Fewest Cost Surprises?

Denser, more consistent granites like Blue Pearl, Uba Tuba, and Steel Grey tend to have fewer fabrication surprises, which keeps costs more predictable. Their tighter mineral structure means fewer hidden fissures that could require a slab replacement mid-project.

Lighter, dramatic stones or marble alternatives like Calacatta-style quartz can carry more variability in cost if cutouts reveal unexpected fragility. We flag this during the consultation so clients know what to expect based on the specific stone they’re considering, not just the general material category.
